Niels Schrader
Niels Schrader was born in 1977
in Caracas, Venezuela. He took
up studies at the University o
f Applied Sciences in Düsseldor
f in 1997 and graduated in Comm
unication Design in 2003. Herea
fter he enrolled for the master
programme at the Sandberg Inst
itute Amsterdam. He worked as a
freelance designer for Uwe Loe
sch and Irma Boom and set up hi
s own studio in Amsterdam in 20
05.
Among his major clients are the
DasArts Foundation, the Amster
dam School of the Arts, the Ber
lage Institute, the Academy of
Creative and Performing Arts, E
pisode Publishers, Museum De Pa
viljoens, Slewe Gallery and KCA
P Architects&Planners. He curre
ntly teaches at the Willem de K
ooning Academy in Rotterdam. In
2008 he worked as a guest tuto
r in design at the Delft Univer
sity of Technology.
His conceptual design is based
on a ‘dialogue principle’ which
translates digital information
into physical media, and vice
versa. This transformation proc
ess of data from one state of a
ggregation to the next often re
sults in new stimulating forms
of artistic expression.
Schrader has received several a
wards and nominations, includin
g the iF communication design a
ward, the red dot: best of the
best and the Certificate of Typ
ographic Excellence. For his wo
rk with digital source codes he
was nominated in the category
‘Net-Art’ for the Internet Soci
ety Award Nederland 2006.
His short film White Blackout w
as screened at various film fes
tivals such as the ‘Amsterdam F
ilm eXperience’, the Weimar ‘ba
ckup_festival’, the ‘Biggest Vi
sual Power Show Essen’ and the
‘Milano Film Festival’ and, in
addition, will be shown soon at
the ‘The Int’l Fest of Cinema
and Technology’ in Los Angeles.
